Gulf of Castellammare

Alcamo is located at the centre of the Gulf of Castellammare, at 258 meters above sea level, on the slopes of Monte Bonifato, a limestone massif that reaches 829 meters above sea level and hosts the Bosco of Alcamo nature reserve and the sanctuary of Maria Santissima dell’Alto (at 514 meters above sea level).

The castle and the course

The castle of the Counts of Modica, dating back to the fourteenth century (see picture below), has a rhombus-shaped plan, with four towers, two of which are square and two cylindrical. The Mother Church (from the 17th century) in the heart of the town, not far from Piazza Ciullo, contains works by Giacomo Gagini and frescoes by Guglielmo Borremans. Other beautiful churches are La Badia Nuova, the Church of Sant’Oliva (18th century) and the Church of Santissimi Paolo and Bartolomeo, in Baroque style, which contains a splendid Madonna del Miele from the 1300s.
